Cardiovascular system

The cardiovascular system, also known as the cardiovascular system, is of crucial importance for the supply of oxygen and vital nutrients to all parts of the body.
In this highly complex network, the heart and blood vessels play the main role in ensuring the continuous circulation of blood.

The integrity of this delicate circulatory system is the basis for the life of humans and animals alike.
Circulation in the cardiovascular system is a closed loop in which blood flows continuously from the heart to the tissues and back to the heart.
This process ensures that oxygen and nutrients reach the cells, while carbon dioxide and metabolic products are removed from the cells.

The regular contraction and relaxation of the heart, known as the heartbeat, ensures that this vital circulation is maintained.
Any disruption or disease in this system can have serious effects on health.

In harmony with the vital life process, the targeted supply of healthy cell components could help to promote the long-term health of this vital system.

Diseases and symptoms

However, illnesses and changes can have considerable negative effects.

  • Heart failure: This is a weakness of the heart muscle in which the heart is no longer able to pump sufficient blood volume to supply the body.
Left heart failure causes tiredness and shortness of breath, while right heart failure leads to edema, especially in the ankles.

  • Coronary heart disease (CHD): CHD is a chronic disease of the heart caused by deposits in the coronary arteries.
This leads to a lack of blood flow with an associated reduced oxygen supply to the heart muscle.

  • Angina pectoris: This is the term used to describe thoracic or retrosternal pain that frequently occurs in attacks and is triggered by ischemia (reduced blood flow) to the heart.
It can also be caused by arteriosclerosis and vasospasms of the coronary arteries, as well as allergies.

  • Heart attack (myocardial infarction): A myocardial infarction occurs when part of the heart muscle is not supplied with sufficient oxygen due to a blocked coronary artery.
This leads to permanent damage to the heart muscle and can lead to life-threatening complications.

Care and maintenance of health

  • Healthy diet: A balanced diet that is low in saturated fats, salt and sugar, but rich in fruit, vegetables and wholegrain products, plays a key role in preventing cardiovascular disease.

  • Regular physical activity: Comprehensive physical activity strengthens the heart and blood vessels.
The goal should be at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week.

  • Quitting smoking: Quitting smoking is one of the most effective measures for preventing cardiovascular disease.

  • Weight control: Maintaining a healthy body weight is crucial for the prevention of heart disease.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as oily fish, linseed and walnuts, can protect the heart.

  • Breathing exercises and stress management: Relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, meditation and yoga help to reduce stress and protect the cardiovascular system.
